For ages I was doing everything right and still not getting the photos I wanted.

My exposure was good. I understood my aperture, my shutter, my ISO. And my photos still came out flat, still didn’t look like the ones that made me want the camera. I assumed I was missing some talent everybody else had.

I wasn’t. I just hadn’t touched the side of the camera where the look actually lives: the film simulation, the white balance shift, the tone and colour settings. Nobody tells you those are the ones that matter. Getting your exposure right makes a correct photo. Those settings are what make it yours.

The day I sorted them, everything changed, and my skill hadn’t moved an inch.

Yeah, a lot of us shoot a similar warm, filmic look. It got popular because it’s genuinely beautiful, that’s not a scandal, that’s good taste spreading. But here’s what the “you all look the same” crowd misses: a recipe is a starting point, not the photo. Hand two people the same one and you’ll get two completely different results, because the look actually lives in how you expose, your white balance shift, and the light you choose. The photos that blur together are people copying a recipe without learning the settings underneath it. The ones with a look that’s unmistakably theirs understand what they’re doing.

That’s the whole thing I teach: not how to copy my look, but how to build one that’s actually yours.

Hi, I'm Steph. A Toronto-based travel photographer building a body of work around small cameras and the atmosphere they capture.
